Another 0.30% account with zero early withdrawal options. Seeing a pattern here.
EKR (Ersparniskasse Rüeggisberg) Provision Account Rendita ranks #44 among 93 3a savings accounts in Switzerland. Like its neighbor SLF Frutigen, EKR offers 0.30% with no fees but zero early withdrawal options. It's a nearly identical product from another tiny Bernese institution, with the same significant limitation.
0.30% interest is the same modest premium over the 0.25% baseline. No management fee, no closure fee. The math is identical to SLF: about CHF 21 per year on a fully funded account, roughly CHF 3.50 more than a typical Privor bank.
That extra CHF 3.50 per year needs to be weighed against the total absence of withdrawal flexibility. Over 30 years, the rate advantage adds up to maybe CHF 100-150 in extra interest. Is that worth losing all early access options? For most people, no.
Ersparniskasse Rüeggisberg is one of Switzerland's smallest savings banks, serving the rural community around Rüeggisberg in Canton Bern. With a tiny customer base and deep local roots, you're banking with an institution where the staff probably knows every client by name.
The Rüeggisberg area is picturesque rural Bern. If you live there and have banked with EKR your whole life, the relationship transcends interest rates. But from a pure product perspective, the 3a account doesn't differentiate itself.
Zero withdrawal options combined with a very small bank creates a double consideration. First, you can't access the money early. Second, extremely small banks sometimes have limited operational capacity for complex scenarios (like multiple 3a accounts, divorce proceedings, or death-related transfers).
Small village savings banks in Switzerland are increasingly under pressure from regulatory costs and competitive dynamics. While EKR has operated for generations, keeping an eye on the bank's long-term viability is prudent when your money is fully locked in.
EKR's 3a account shares the same fatal flaw as SLF's: zero early withdrawal options. The tiny rate premium doesn't compensate for being completely locked in. Unless you're a lifelong Rüeggisberg resident with deep loyalty to the bank, look at more flexible options in our Pillar 3a comparison tool.
Verdict: The zero withdrawal restriction makes this impractical for most savers. A marginally better rate isn't worth the lost flexibility.
