BCV's entry-level formula is free. It's also less generous than its Premium sibling.
The BCV Formule Directe ranks #12 among Switzerland's 45 private accounts. It's the standard free account from the Cantonal Bank of Vaud, positioned below the Formule Premium (ranked #7). Same bank, same zero base fees, but with some notable differences in ATM access and transaction costs.
No account management fee. No debit card fee. Free domestic payments and SEPA transfers. Online card payments in CHF, both domestic and foreign, are free with the Visa Debit. Identical to BCV Formule Premium on the surface.
The real gap shows up at the ATM: own BCV ATMs are free, but other Swiss ATMs cost CHF 3 per withdrawal. That's CHF 1 more per withdrawal than most competitors charge. The CHF 1 per foreign currency transaction fee also applies here, and non-SEPA international payments cost CHF 6.
This is BCV's entry-level formula, not its showcase product. The standout isn't a flashy feature; it's the accessibility of getting cantonal bank service at zero base cost. You still get the Visa Debit, mobile banking, and online banking included.
BCV is one of Switzerland's largest cantonal banks with a strong regional presence in Vaud. The Canton of Vaud's state guarantee protects your deposits beyond standard Swiss deposit insurance. For someone who banks primarily near BCV branches and ATMs, the everyday cost is genuinely zero.
The CHF 3 per non-BCV ATM withdrawal is above average. Most competing accounts charge CHF 2 for out-of-network withdrawals. If you make 10 non-BCV withdrawals per month, that's CHF 360 per year versus CHF 240 at most other banks. Your geography matters a lot here.
The age 30+ requirement is identical to BCV Formule Premium. That means if you're under 30 in Vaud, neither BCV formula is available to you. You're also limited to two debit cards per package. Cash withdrawal fees abroad cost CHF 5, and foreign currency card transactions add CHF 1 each.
BCV Formule Directe is a functional free account if you're 30+, live near BCV ATMs, and don't need frequent out-of-network withdrawals. But honestly, if you qualify for this, you also qualify for Formule Premium (ranked #7), which offers better ATM terms. Compare both side by side in our compare Swiss bank accounts tool.
Verdict: Functional free banking, but the Premium formula is better for most people. Check if you can upgrade.
