UBS offers a zero-fee digital account. But getting cash from an ATM costs extra.
The UBS key4 Personal Account Pure ranks #18 among Switzerland's 45 private accounts. It's UBS's digital-first offering with no account or card fees. The catch? Cash withdrawals aren't included by default, and you'll pay for that convenience through optional modules.
No account management fee and no debit card fee. You even get both a Mastercard Debit and a Visa Debit card at zero cost. Domestic payments are free. That's genuinely free everyday banking from Switzerland's largest bank.
Here's where it gets complicated. Cash withdrawals at non-UBS ATMs aren't included. You need to add a cash module: CHF 2 per month for 2 free third-party withdrawals in Switzerland, or CHF 5 per month for 4 domestic plus 2 abroad. Without a module, every non-UBS withdrawal costs CHF 2 domestically or CHF 5 abroad.
The dual debit card setup is unusual. You get both Mastercard Debit and Visa Debit, which gives you maximum acceptance worldwide. Most banks only offer one or the other. If you've ever been stuck with a merchant that only takes Visa (or only Mastercard), this solves that problem.
It's UBS, which carries weight. Systemically important bank, massive branch network if you ever need in-person help, and a well-built mobile and online banking platform. The 50 KeyClub welcome points are a small perk, not a dealmaker.
This is only available as part of the key4 package. You can't get this account standalone outside UBS's digital ecosystem. SEPA transfers cost CHF 0.30 each and non-SEPA international payments are CHF 5. Those per-transaction costs add up if you bank internationally.
The age requirement is 26 and over. And if you add the cash withdrawal module (which most people need), your 'free' account actually costs CHF 24-60 per year. That's still competitive, but it's not zero. Factor in the modules before comparing this to other free accounts.
For a digital-first UBS experience with dual debit cards and no base fees, the key4 Pure is appealing. Just budget for the cash module if you use ATMs at all. To see how it ranks against other fee-free options, check our best private accounts in Switzerland guide.
Verdict: Genuinely free UBS banking if you rarely need cash. Factor in ATM modules for a realistic cost picture.
