Our Take on PostFinance Mastercard Gold

Your Swiss Finance Companion
Adrien Missioux

1% cashback year one (0.5% after) plus CHF 12,500 trip insurance. But no medical coverage abroad.

The PostFinance Mastercard Gold doubles the cashback compared to their standard card and adds meaningful trip insurance. At CHF 100 annually (often discounted or included with packages), it's better value than the standard tier. However, the declining cashback and lack of medical coverage limit its appeal compared to competitors. Also available on the other network: PostFinance Visa Gold Card.

Is CHF 100 Worth It?

The math is mixed. 1% cashback year one, 0.5% thereafter. CHF 20,000 annual spending = CHF 200 first year, CHF 100 after. Year one easily covers the fee; year two onwards is break-even with spending alone.

CHF 12,500 trip cancellation coverage adds value (worth CHF 30-50 standalone). If you'd buy trip insurance anyway, the card provides meaningful return. But note: no medical coverage abroad, which is unusual for a gold card.

What Actually Stands Out

The 1.7% FX fee is better than average (most gold cards charge 2%). For PostFinance customers, the banking integration adds convenience: unified statement management, automatic payments, single-platform view of finances.

Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Garmin Pay all work. CHF 1,000 purchase protection is modest but covers small electronics and gifts. Our credit card insurance guide compares coverage across all Swiss cards.

What Most Reviews Miss

The absence of medical coverage abroad is a significant gap. Most gold cards include CHF 200,000-300,000 medical coverage. PostFinance Gold offers trip cancellation but won't help if you get sick or injured traveling. You'd need separate travel insurance for medical emergencies.

The declining cashback structure means year-one value doesn't represent ongoing value. Budget accordingly: 1% won't continue. Cantonal bank gold cards with consistent earning may serve better long-term.

The Bottom Line

Better than PostFinance Standard but limited by declining cashback and missing medical coverage. Reasonable for PostFinance customers who value banking integration, less compelling for travelers who need comprehensive protection. Compare alternatives in our best premium credit cards in Switzerland guide. This card is also available on Visa (Visa Gold) with identical benefits.

Verdict: Decent for PostFinance loyalists. The lack of medical coverage limits travel utility significantly.

Best For: PostFinance customers who want gold-tier benefits with banking integration, domestic travelers who need trip cancellation coverage (not medical), those with discounted or included pricing through PostFinance packages
Consider Alternatives If: you want medical coverage abroad (this card doesn't include it), you're not in the PostFinance ecosystem (no integration benefit), you dislike declining cashback rates (0.5% ongoing is modest)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 1% cashback last forever?
Only the first year. From year two it drops to 0.5%. On CHF 30,000 annual spend that's CHF 300 the first year, then CHF 150 every year after. Cash withdrawals, fees, and interest don't qualify. The Gold card's cashback essentially halves once the introductory period ends, so factor in the steady-state return when comparing alternatives.
How does the CHF 40 supplementary fee compare?
CHF 40 per extra card per year. That's below the cashback segment average (around CHF 22 looks lower but is skewed by free-card outliers) and well under the premium-segment CHF 55. PostFinance prices supplementary cards more aggressively than most issuers; useful if both partners need a card on the same account.
Are domestic cash withdrawals cheaper here than on most Swiss cards?
3.50% domestically with a CHF 10 minimum, below the typical 4% you see on most Swiss credit cards. A CHF 200 domestic ATM withdrawal costs CHF 10 (the minimum kicks in). Still expensive compared to a debit card, but cheaper than the bulk of cashback peers.
