Our Take on Cornèrcard SAC Visa

Free in year one, then CHF 100, with a Swiss Alpine Club design. Here's what's under the artwork.
The Cornèrcard SAC Visa ranks #41 among 122 cashback cards in our ranking, one place above the Cornèrcard Visa Classic. That's no coincidence: it's essentially the Classic in SAC colours. Climbers and hikers get the look; the numbers are standard Cornèrcard.
Is CHF 100 Worth It After Year One?
Year one costs nothing. From year two you pay CHF 100 for 0.3% cashback on CHF purchases, 0.6% in foreign currencies and a 1.2% FX fee. To earn the fee back through cashback alone, you'd need CHF 33,334 of Swiss spending a year. Most people won't get close.
What the fee really buys is the insurance package: purchase protection, shopping legal protection and a best-price guarantee. The SAC page doesn't list the coverage amounts, so you can't compare them precisely. If they matter to you, ask Cornèrcard for the conditions before you apply.
What Actually Stands Out
The SAC card design is the differentiator, full stop. If you want the Swiss Alpine Club in your wallet, this is how you get it. Like other Cornèrcard cards, you don't need a Cornèr bank account, and you can split your monthly bill into instalments (minimum CHF 50 or 2.5% of the balance).
The 1.2% FX fee is decent for climbing trips to Arco or Chamonix. On CHF 2,000 of euro spending, you pay CHF 24 in FX fees and get CHF 12 back as cashback. Not free, but well below the 1.75% to 2.5% many Swiss cards charge.
What Most Reviews Miss
The SAC page still advertises 0.5% cashback. Cornèrcard's current fee table says 0.3% on CHF purchases and 0.6% in foreign currencies, the same as the Classic. We use the fee table numbers. Don't pick this card expecting 0.5% at home.
The apply button on the SAC page opens Cornèrcard's standard Classic promo application, so make sure the SAC design is what ends up in your mailbox. We found no SAC membership requirement on Cornèrcard's or the SAC's site. And there's no travel or medical insurance.
The Bottom Line
Buy it for the design, not the numbers. Financially it's the Cornèrcard Classic, and from year two the WWF Visa (CHF 85) and the Greenhope Visa (CHF 80) cost less for the same cashback. Compare the full field in our best credit cards in Switzerland guide.
Verdict: A Cornèrcard Classic in SAC colours. Fine for year one, worth reconsidering when the CHF 100 fee kicks in.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there a Mastercard version of the Cornèrcard SAC card?
- Yes. Cornèrcard lists the SAC card as also available as a Mastercard. This one is the Visa, and it's a single-network card, so you choose one or the other rather than getting both.
- How long until SAC card cashback shows up on my bill?
- As soon as you've collected CHF 25. Cornèrcard credits it to your statement in one go at that point. Spending in euros earns 0.6%, so CHF 4,167 of foreign-currency purchases gets you there; in francs at 0.3% it takes CHF 8,334.
