Our Take on Cornèrcard HCL Gold Mastercard

Your Swiss Finance Companion
Adrien Missioux
Adrien Missioux•

The Cornèrcard Gold's CHF 1.5 million medical cover, for CHF 80 a year instead of CHF 190.

The Cornèrcard HCL Gold Mastercard ranks #26 among 115 premium cards and #17 among 122 cashback cards in our ranking. It's HC Lugano's gold fan card, and it carries the same core insurance and cashback as the Cornèrcard Gold Mastercard at less than half the annual fee.

What Are You Actually Paying For?

CHF 80 a year buys CHF 1,500,000 of medical cover abroad, CHF 40,000 of trip cancellation cover with family coverage, and CHF 2,000 purchase protection. That's the insurance package of the Cornèrcard Gold, which charges CHF 190 from year two.

The cashback pays the fee for you: 0.6% on CHF purchases and 1.2% in foreign currencies. CHF 13,334 of Swiss spending covers the CHF 80. Abroad, the 1.2% cashback cancels out the 1.2% FX fee, so foreign purchases cost you nothing extra.

What Actually Stands Out

The CHF 110 annual saving over the Cornèrcard Gold is the headline from year two. Then come the fan perks from HC Lugano: 10% off match jerseys at Shop '41, 10% at the Club '41 restaurant, 10% off tickets bought at the club secretariat and 10% off hospitality.

You can also pay QR invoices, like a season ticket, directly in the iCornèr app. New cardholders applying by 30 November 2026 get 1,000 HCL points in December, redeemable with a 5a Linea membership. No Cornèr bank account needed.

What Most Reviews Miss

Year one can favour the regular Gold. Cornèrcard Gold's offer for new clients applying by 29 November 2026 is CHF 95 in year one plus triple cashback until 31 January 2027, worth up to CHF 300 extra. If you'll spend heavily over the next few months, that beats saving CHF 15 on the HCL Gold.

There's no lounge access, and Cornèrcard's 08.2026 fee table lists no additional cards, so your partner can't get a second card on your account. Cashback also only credits once you've built up CHF 25. None of these are deal-breakers, but they're the gaps versus pricier gold cards.

The Bottom Line

If you want gold-level travel insurance without gold-level fees, this is one of the cheapest routes in Switzerland, hockey fan or not. HC Lugano doesn't list a fan requirement for the card. Compare it with the alternatives in our best premium credit cards in Switzerland ranking.

Verdict: The Cornèrcard Gold at a CHF 110 discount. Take the regular Gold only if you'll make full use of its first-year triple cashback.

Best For: travellers who want CHF 1.5M medical cover abroad for CHF 80 a year, HC Lugano fans who buy tickets, jerseys or hospitality, people spending in foreign currencies who want cashback to cancel out the FX fee
Consider Alternatives If: airport lounge access matters to you, you want a second card for your partner on the same account, you'll spend enough in the coming months to profit from the Cornèrcard Gold's triple cashback offer

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HCL Gold come with a Visa as well as the Mastercard?
No, it's Mastercard only. The HCL Gold is a single-network card, while the regular Cornèrcard Gold gives you both a Visa and a Mastercard for its fee. If you want a backup network for the odd terminal that refuses Mastercard, you'd need a second card.
Does the HCL Gold Mastercard travel insurance cover my family?
Yes. Travel insurance with family cover is part of the HCL Gold's package, included in the CHF 80 annual fee. The HCL Black has no travel insurance at all, so family cover is the main reason to pick Gold over Black.
