Our Take on finpension Switzerland 40

Your Swiss Finance Companion
Adrien Missioux
Adrien Missioux•

A Swiss-heavy 40% equity mix at a flat 0.39%. The home bias has cost returns so far, though.

finpension Switzerland 40 ranks #65 among 122 3a investment funds in our comparison. It holds 40% stocks, 50% bonds, 9% real estate and 1% cash, with about 70% of the stocks in Swiss companies. It suits cautious investors who want moderate growth with as little currency exposure as possible.

Is the Swiss Home Bias Worth It?

So far, no. After the 0.39% fee, Switzerland 40 returned 19.80% over three years and 2.83% over five. finpension Global 40, at the same fee and risk level, did 22.33% and 4.55%. That's 2.53 points less over three years and 1.72 over five. Swiss stocks lagged world stocks in this period.

What you get in exchange is less currency risk. About 70% of the equity part is Swiss (Large Caps plus Small & Mid Caps), versus about 40% in Global, so 28% of the whole portfolio sits in Swiss stocks. Bonds and real estate tilt home too. If franc swings genuinely worry you, that's a real benefit, but it hasn't been free in return terms.

What Actually Stands Out

The fee is flat and complete: 0.39% a year, all-in, with no custody, transaction or FX fees on top. That's CHF 195 a year on CHF 50,000, versus CHF 385 at the 0.77% average of the other 3a investment funds in our comparison. VIAC Global 40 costs 0.33% all-in, so CHF 30 a year less on the same balance.

The funds are institutional Swisscanto index funds reserved for pension money. They reclaim a large part of the foreign withholding tax on dividends, and there's no stamp duty on purchases and sales. Swisscanto by Zürcher Kantonalbank is the custodian, and the 3a belongs to the finpension 3a Vorsorgestiftung in Schwyz, not to the app company.

What Most Reviews Miss

The closest rival isn't VIAC, it's findependent Switzerland 40: also Swiss-focused and 0.29% all-in, CHF 50 a year less per CHF 50,000. The catch is that its performance is back-tested, since the product only launched on 19 October 2026. A simulation isn't a track record. finpension's numbers are real and after fees, even if they're not flattering.

A 50% bond slice also didn't protect much over five years. The window includes the bond sell-off when interest rates rose in 2022, which is why five years show just 2.83%. Then there's concentration: the Large Caps Switzerland fund alone is 20% of the portfolio, so a few large Swiss companies drive a big share of your stock returns.

The Bottom Line

finpension Switzerland 40 is a clean, low-cost moderate 3a, but the home bias has been a drag rather than a boost. Pick it if lower currency risk matters more to you than keeping up with world markets. Otherwise Global 40 has done better at the same price. Our VIAC vs finpension vs frankly comparison puts the providers side by side. Opening an account? Code RTEQJB gives a CHF 25 fee credit once you've paid in CHF 1,000 within 12 months (enter it at sign-up or within 24 hours).

Verdict: A fair, transparent moderate 3a for investors who put Swiss francs ahead of global diversification and accept lower returns so far.

Best For: cautious investors who want moderate growth with most of their stocks in Swiss companies, finpension clients who want less currency risk at a 40% equity level
Consider Alternatives If: you want the best track record at this risk level, where finpension Global 40 has done better, you want broad global diversification rather than about 70% Swiss stocks in the equity part, you want the lowest fee, since VIAC Global 40 costs 0.33% and findependent 0.29%
