Our Take on finpension Sustainable 80

Your Swiss Finance Companion
Adrien Missioux
Adrien Missioux•

80% stocks, a sustainability focus and a 0.39% fee. Cheaper than VIAC Global 80, slightly behind finpension Global 80.

finpension Sustainable 80 ranks #22 among 122 3a investment funds in our comparison, with results close to Global 80. It holds 80% stocks, 10% bonds, 9% real estate and 1% cash, with most of it in Swisscanto's Responsible index funds. It suits investors with 15+ years to go who want growth and a sustainability focus.

How Do the Fees and Returns Stack Up?

You pay a flat 0.39% a year, all-in, identical to Global 80. On CHF 50,000, that's CHF 195, versus CHF 230 at VIAC Global 80 (0.46%) and CHF 385 at the 0.77% average of other 3a funds in our comparison. Against sustainable bank funds at 1.2% to 1.6%, such as UBS Vitainvest Sustainable, you save CHF 405 to CHF 605 a year on the same balance.

Net of fees, Sustainable 80 is up 14.41% over one year, 40.88% over three and 26.04% over five. finpension Global 80 did 14.97%, 42.54% and 27.16%. That's a gap of 1.66 points over three years and 1.12 over five, the widest among finpension's sustainable strategies, but still modest.

What Actually Stands Out

The funds are institutional Swisscanto index funds reserved for pension money. They reclaim a large part of the foreign withholding tax on dividends, which matters at 80% equity, and there's no stamp duty on purchases and sales. Swisscanto by Zürcher Kantonalbank is the custodian. No custody, transaction or FX fees sit on top of the 0.39%.

At this level, the sustainable label covers most of your money. All stocks plus the Corp. World and Swiss franc bonds use Responsible funds, about 87% of the portfolio. The rest is small: World ex CHF government bonds (2%), emerging market hard currency bonds (1%) and real estate (9%), the same funds as in Global 80.

What Most Reviews Miss

frankly Strong 75 Responsible is the natural sustainable peer: 75% equity and 0.46% all-in. It's up 39.69% over three years, a bit below Sustainable 80, but 32.58% over five, well ahead of finpension's 26.04%. Higher fee, less equity, better five-year record. Our sustainable 3a funds guide puts both side by side with other options.

With 80% stocks and only 10% bonds, the cushion is thin, so stock market falls hit almost in full. The home bias stays as well: about 40% of the equity part is Swiss, 32% of the whole portfolio. That means less currency risk, but more concentration in a handful of large Swiss companies.

The Bottom Line

finpension Sustainable 80 gives you a growth-oriented sustainable 3a for less than VIAC Global 80 or frankly Strong 75 Responsible, with returns close to Global 80. frankly has the better five-year record, so compare before you commit. It fits best if you have 15+ years ahead and won't sell in a downturn. New clients can use code RTEQJB for a CHF 25 fee credit after paying in CHF 1,000 within 12 months (enter it at sign-up or within 24 hours).

Verdict: A low-cost, mostly Responsible growth 3a for long-horizon investors who want sustainability without paying a premium.

Best For: investors with 15+ years to go who want a growth-oriented sustainable 3a, ESG-minded savers who want most of their money in Responsible funds at 0.39%, finpension clients who want Global 80's risk level with a sustainability focus
Consider Alternatives If: you're within 10 years of withdrawal and couldn't stomach a sharp fall, you want the best five-year record among sustainable peers, where frankly Strong 75 Responsible leads, you want a pure world portfolio without a 40% Swiss slice in the equity part
